Flush sediment from a tank-style water heater

Sediment can accumulate in tank-style water heaters and may reduce efficiency or contribute to noise and wear.

How to handle this maintenance item

  1. Confirm the manufacturer recommends flushing and follow its shutdown procedure.
  2. Use a safe drain route and beware that tank water can be extremely hot.
  3. Restore water and energy source in the correct order after service.
Safety note
Hot water can cause severe burns. If you are unsure of the shutdown, draining or restart procedure, use a plumber.

Before you start

Use the equipment manual and model-specific instructions as the primary source. Shut off power, water or fuel only when the manufacturer procedure calls for it and you are comfortable identifying the correct control. Stop if the condition you find is different from what the guide describes.

When to bring in a professional

This task includes work that may require specialized tools, safe access, combustion/electrical knowledge or a qualified inspection. Use the steps above as the homeowner checklist and preparation guide, then hire the appropriate professional for the higher-risk portion.
