Inspect and clean the composite / PVC deck

Composite and PVC decking usually does not need routine staining or sealing, but the deck, railings, stairs and visible fasteners still benefit from regular inspection and cleaning.

How to handle this maintenance item

  1. Inspect walking surfaces, stairs, railings and visible connections for movement, damage or loose components.
  2. Clean the surface using the deck manufacturer's approved method and products.
  3. Check gaps, drainage and areas where debris can hold moisture against framing or the home.
  4. Address structural movement, loose railings or damaged boards before normal use.
Safety note
Do not apply stain, sealer, harsh chemicals or pressure-washing methods unless the decking manufacturer specifically allows them.

Before you start

Use the equipment manual and model-specific instructions as the primary source. Shut off power, water or fuel only when the manufacturer procedure calls for it and you are comfortable identifying the correct control. Stop if the condition you find is different from what the guide describes.

When to bring in a professional

This task includes work that may require specialized tools, safe access, combustion/electrical knowledge or a qualified inspection. Use the steps above as the homeowner checklist and preparation guide, then hire the appropriate professional for the higher-risk portion.
